It was originally called Aspinock and later changed to Killingly. Early residents of the town developed a number of successful businesses and served a large trading area in what was known as Attawaugan or West Killingly. The town was home to many notable citizens including Dr. Sidney P. Marland, the Commissioner of Education in Connecticut from 1970 to 1972. Charles Lewis Tiffany, founder of Tiffany’s in New York City and Mary Dixon Kies, who received the first patent issued to a woman in America, both listed Killingly as their birthplace.
