Costs vary by material type, R-value, and installation method. Blown-in attic insulation, a form of loose-fill insulation made from fiberglass or cellulose (recycled paper), is typically the least expensive option. It’s installed using a blowing machine, and it fills gaps and covers surfaces more evenly than batt insulation. However, it can settle over time and lose its R-value. It can also absorb moisture, which increases the risk of mold and mildew.

Spray foam attic insulation is more expensive than other options but has a higher R-value and works well in hard-to-reach areas like corners and seams. It comes in open- and closed-cell varieties, with the latter being more dense and impermeable and providing a better seal. However, it can create a vault-like effect in attics and is more difficult to remove or replace.

Structural insulated panels, or SIPs, are an alternative to traditional attic insulation and consist of rigid foam board with a layer of plywood or oriented strand board (OSB) attached to them. These panels are more expensive than other types of insulation but have a higher R-value and provide strong, long-lasting support to your attic structure. However, they’re best used in new construction projects rather than retrofitting existing attics.
